The greatness of America is based on ...
Vol. XXII, No. 9, Nov/Dec 2009
John Adams wrote: “what do we mean by the American Revolution? The war? That was no part of the Revolution: it was only an effect and consequence of it. The Revolution was in the minds of the people ... a change in their religious sentiments.” Those religious sentiments were forged in the fiery sermons of the first great Awakening or Revival.
Our nation came into being through faith. It has developed its greatness primarily because of the Christian faith. And it will maintain its greatness only if the Christian faith continues to be strong and vigilant, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” We are a nation that has been blessed of God in giving us not only leadership that was and has been, for the most part, Christian in their faith, but a populace that was shaped in its thinking and character by a recognition of the overarching presence and help of Almighty God.
If the future of the nation has any greatness in its character and culture, it will be by the continuing faith and praying of Christians. We have the responsibility of leading in submission and obedience to the laws of the land, and for setting the pattern for decency in society. And we have the continuing responsibility of witnessing to the goodness of God and His wonderful grace in Jesus Christ. “Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them who fear Him ... to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.”
