Don’t Adjust It, Trust It
from Spotswood Baptist Church newsletter Vol. IV, No. 7, October 1991
Several years ago Dr. E. V. Hill, one of the great black preachers of our day, coined a phrase about the Bible that is absolutely on target. In a sermon dealing with critics who attack the Bible and question its accuracy, Dr. Hill summarized his entire sermon in just one sentence, "Don't adjust it; trust it!"
Now that is good advice! I have met many so-called intelligent folk who have attempted to challenge the accuracy and reliability of the Bible. They have either tried to prove that the Bible is in error or they have raised questions about it. There have also been those who have been cast into deep depression, some even into despair, who have simply followed the path of doubt.
We Christians live in a day in which the Bible has been attacked by many enemies. The tragedy is that those who should be the most concerned act as though there is no problem. They want to make us believe that there is no attack on the integrity, inerrancy, and reliability of the Bible. Any man or woman who has been to college or seminary during the past four years knows that the Bible has been and even today continues to be, in some circles, under severe attack. Within the context of the preaching and teaching ministry of the Bible in Spotswood Baptist Church, my position and every teacher's position in our Sunday School and church is "Don't adjust it - Trust it!"
Take your Bible and make it your constant companion. Take it to work with you. Take it to school with you. Make it part of your required equipment and accessories so that you are never physically or spiritually far away from Bible. Hide its words in your heart that you might not sin against God, and ask God to lead you to commit it to memory so that the Spirit of God may bring to your mind whatever Scripture you need for any given situation.
I thank God that our church is a Bible-believing, Bible-practicing, and Bible-proclaiming fellowship. The Bible is our basis and authority for all that we say, believe, and do. Let's continue to obey the Word of God and move forward under the Lord's leadership.
