Review: They Call Him Junior: The Autobiography of Junior Hill

Reviewed by T. C. Pinckney                                                                Vol. XIX, No. 7, September 2007

Junior Hill is one of the best known American evangelists and certainly one of the best beloved. When Junior preaches, you hear the straight gospel well illustrated with heart-warming stories that bring his points home and to which everyone can relate. It is easy to understand why when you learn that Junior was born and raised, and has lived almost his entire life in the small town of Hartselle, Alabama.

This book, not surprisingly, is much like Junior himself: unpretentious, straightforward, warm, humorous but making very important points, and – most important – completely committed to God.

Junior includes many interesting vignettes about his youth, his family, his wife Carole, his first churches (he was a pastor for eleven years), and – of course – his many years as an evangelist. He covers his life “warts and all”: his shyness and sensitivity to his size, the difficulties of being away from family and home so much, the rules he set for himself as an evangelist (for example, NEVER set a price or ask for money; never be away more than a week without spending at least one night at home; once committed to a pastor/church, never back out, no matter what “better offer” may come along).

They Call Him Junior is a warm, easy, but very informative book, one that will often make you smile and occasionally cry. I recommend it to you in the strongest possible terms.
