Colorado's Other Massacre

While the eyes of the world are focused on Columbine High School where two boys chose Hitler's birthday to kill 12 of their fellow students, one teacher and then themselves, there is another massacre in Colorado that rarely gains attention from the press.

Warren Hern specializes in late-term abortions in Boulder. Several years ago, he described a New Year's Eve phone call to a friend who also does abortions. "Where are you calling from?" he was asked.

"My office," Hern replied. His friend retorted: "Still killing babies this late on a Saturday afternoon?" Hern later told The New York Times he had been cut deeply by that joke, of course, not as deeply as Hern would be cutting into the bodies of helpless unborn children. "There is a horror at what I do," Hern told the Times reporter. Unlike Littleton, however, apparently not enough horror to cause the president to convene a White House summit to ask what would possess a man to make his living killing children. For Bill Clinton, who has twice vetoed the ban on partial-birth abortions, Warren Hern is just a solid citizen, a medical professional helping protect "the right to choose."

What a horrible choice.
