Spokesmen for the four-year-old Episcopal Synod of America (ESA) say it is the largest national organization for Episcopalians "committed to biblical faith and morality, and an increasingly prominent vehicle for their work and witness." The Synod affirms heterosexual monogamy as the Christian moral norm, actively opposes the ordination of practicing homosexuals, and speaks out against "unisex" language for God and Jesus Christ. "If the liberal leadership of the Episcopal Church thinks we are merely going to grumble quietly at their rewrite of the Christian faith and do nothing about it, they are in for quite a surprise," said Rev. Samuel Edwards, executive director of the Synod. "We have no intention of exchanging the eternal treasure that God has given his church for the modernist costume-jewelry that they want us to put on." The Synod was formed in 1989 and has spoken out against attempts by church leaders to ordain women as priests and bishops, ordain homosexuals, and introduce "gender-neutral" language about God.
