OPINION: The Most Important Issue Facing the Church and the Nation
by Dr. Robert Dreyfus Vol. XVIII, No. 9, October 2005
As Christians we need to recognize that the institution most responsible for producing the problems in America is the public (government) school system. Schools have indoctrinated generations of children to believe in evolution, relativism, post-modernism, feminism, multiculturalism, pluralism, socialism, mindless tolerance, sexual promiscuity, a phony self-esteem, and dumbed down academics. In addition they are taught that God is irrelevant, and that the philosophy of secular humanism holds the hope for mankind. These beliefs are relentlessly drummed into children with great purpose and passion. The goal is to instill a secular worldview in adults who serve in the courts, the government, the news media, the entertainment industry and even in our churches.
Unfortunately the church has largely ignored the toxic effects that government schools have upon children, or has spent time and energy in the hopeless task of trying to improve them. A. Hodge, of Princeton Theological Seminary said in 1887, “I am sure as I am of the fact of Christ’s reign that a comprehensive and centralized system of national education separated from religion, as is now commonly proposed, will prove the most appalling engine for the propagation of anti-Christian and atheistic unbelief, social and political, which this sin rent world has ever seen.” For ninety-two years Christians have been losing the cultural war. The reason why many of us have been unsuccessful in this is that we’ve been mostly hacking at the branches rather than at the root of the problem that’s producing the evils in our nation. Like many, I’ve fought for the good rather than fighting for the best. I could give many examples of this. One example is that of pro-life activists, who have demonstrated by word and deed that they are committed to uphold the word of God, and have worked tirelessly. Nevertheless, the number of abortions performed has not changed significantly over the last two decades.
I used to perform general anesthesia at the county hospital in Miami. When there was a major accident involving numerous individuals I would be called to the E. R. in order to perform triage, i.e. to evaluate the appropriate management of the victims. Generally the situation was such that some would survive regardless of whether or not any treatment was administered. Others would have a chance of survival if swift care was given, and some would probably not survive regardless of whether or not they received treatment. In comparison those children who have gone through a secular education are probably beyond hope, and those who are presently being homeschooled or in a Christian school probably do not need help. I’ve decided to spend my time, energy, and money to inform Christians of the toxic nature of government schools, and encourage them to remove their children from these schools, and either home school or place them in a thoroughly Christian school based upon the following:
1. Abortion is monstrous. However, an aborted child is held blameless, and is a partaker of God’s grace. He is not subjected to a school system that would take his salvation from him.
2. God has given the responsibility to the parent to “train-up” the child. Pr 22:6, Deut 6:1-9. If we follow God’s command to provide children between the ages of 3 – 13 with a thoroughly Christian education, they will know truth and have a biblical worldview. These are the children who will receive God’s grace and whom he will use to save the nation. Martin Luther stated, “There is nothing which will more surely earn hell for a man than the improper training of his children; and parents can perform no more damaging bit of work than to neglect their offspring, to let them curse, swear, learn indecent words and songs, and permit them to live as they please. .. it is highly necessary that every married person regard the soul of his child with greater concern than the flesh which has come from him, that he consider the child nothing less than a precious, eternal treasure, entrusted to his protection by God so that the devil, the world, and the flesh do not steal and destroy it. For the child will be required from the parent on Judgment Day in a very strict reckoning.”
3. By placing a child in an anti-Christian environment where children are taught to honor false gods, i.e. sex, rock music, MTV, violent electronic games, drinking, and smoking, and their own opinions rather than God's Word, parents are dishonoring and disobeying God’s command on a day to day basis. God has promised that the prayers of those will not be heard who blatantly disrespect and disobey His Word, Isa 1:4-15. If Christians do nothing and remain silent about this evil, God has promised to destroy us.
4. Children who die at an age of accountability, who have not yet accepted Christ as their personal Savior and repented, will perish in their sins.
Scripture is emphatic that our children are a heritage from the Lord. They must be brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Humanism has no place in our hearts, churches, homes, or classrooms. It should be the goal of Christians to educate their children in thoroughly Christian schools or home school them. Government secular humanist schools belong to the world of the antichrist, and we to that of Christ our Lord. We have different lords, and we also need a different kind of education. There are tens of millions of Christian children in government schools who are being devastated spiritually, morally, and academically by the pagan ideology taught within government schools on a daily basis. A study done by the Baptist Council on Family Life in 2002 stated: Eighty-eight percent of children from evangelical homes who attend government schools will within two years of graduation from high school leave the church, and many never return! Two hours of Church does not make up for thirty-five hours a week in government schools. Another study showed that ninety-six percent of home schooled children accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. Professor R. L. Dabney of Union Theological Seminary said, “The education of children for God is the most important business done on earth…Every parent especially ought to feel, every hour of the day, that, next to making his own calling and election sure, this is the end for which he is kept alive by God – this is his task on earth.”
II Cor. 6:14 "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness?" This is exactly what we do when we send our children to government schools.
A recent census reported that there are seventy-three million young people under eighteen living in America today, with thirty-one million of them between the ages of five and twelve. Studies show that by the time a child reaches the age of thirteen he has developed the world view and the relationship he will have with Christ throughout his life! Unless we reach the child by the time he is in the 6th grade he has probably hardened his heart to the gospel.
I pray that all Christians work to save all children – both the born and the unborn. We need to tithe of our time to inform others of the devastation schools inflict. Christians must remove their children from “Pharaoh’s” schools. We must also encourage home schooling and the establishment of thoroughly Christian schools. Doing this will save millions of souls, and perhaps even save the nation.
Does it make sense to expend time, energy, and money doing things that are relatively unproductive or unimportant, and ignore the most important issue? Please take part in helping save the children. We are also grateful for any financial contribution you can make.
If you would like further information, I’ll be glad to provide it.
