review by T. C. Pinckney Vol. XVIII, No. 7, August 2005
This brief (126 pp.) paperback is a quick read but thoroughly treats baptism, its history, requirements, necessity of being baptized, who should be baptized, why immersion is the only proper mode, and its meaning, purpose, and outcome. The final chapter discusses why one immersion is sufficient and should not be repeated.
Russell writes clearly, concisely, and forthrightly. His reasoning proceeds from the Bible, not men’s preferences, and so is irrefutable for anyone who believes and acts upon God’s Word. As Russell puts it, “It is not for us to dispute and argue over our Lord’s commandments but to obey them. Baptism, then, is not subject to our own particular inclinations or opinions. It is as mandatory and necessary as the Lord’s Supper.” (p. 30)
I highly recommend this book. It will clarify any hazy facets of your understanding of baptism and will fortify you should you discuss the subject with others. And it will increase your appreciation of baptism as a public pronouncement of our salvation, regeneration, and obedience.
