Texas Conservatives Report
Vol. XI, No. 6, June/July 1998
As Banner readers know, last November Texas conservatives declared themselves a separate state convention as we did in Virginia during September ‘96. The Lord is blessing conservative efforts there just as He has here. Between 1 January and 31 March something over 100 churches aligned with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention and giving is way above their initial “guesstimate” budget. The SBTC does not arrange or initiate conservative rallies, but they do send representatives if the local churches in an area set up a meeting. These have been characterized by excellent attendance and great enthusiasm. For example, at one meeting way out in the country in West Texas, so many people came that they could not all get in to the church. By way of contrast, the moderate Baptist General Convention of Texas scheduled 35 rallies around the state which flopped. Perhaps the most dramatic failure was in Marshall where only six people came, and one of them was a conservative. In Denton the number doubled to 13 or 14 of whom at least one was a conservative, and in Lubbock there was a “crowd” of 31 including some 10 curious conservatives. Pray that the Lord continues to bless our conservative brothers in Texas. [TCP]
