NC President Opposes SBC

Vol. VII, No. 10, December 1994

Alfred Ayscue, was elected president of the NC Baptist State Convention in November 1993 and re-elected this November. The Greensboro News and Record, described his remarks at a recent meeting of the "Cooperative Baptist Fellowship" held in Greensboro, this way: "Ayscue told the North Carolinians that since moderates still control the state convention, they should still give generously to the state convention and add specific instructions that no money go to the Southern Baptist Convention." He was then quoted as saying, "If you keep buying bullets for those who shoot us, that's your choice, but I would ask you to consider what that means."

[Bold print added for emphasis. We may not think highly of Mr. Ayscue's integrity (upon election he assured NC messengers that he would be "inclusive" in his actions), but perhaps we should commend him for finally demonstrating his true colors. He clearly states that it is moderate control which is important. He doesn't mention missions, evangelism, or theology ... only moderate control. It is hard to feature a state Baptist president recommending to churches that they NOT give anything to the SBC! Please note that I take no exception to his going with the CBF if that is what he feels is best. Every Baptist has the right to decide for himself. The problem arises when a man or an organization says one thing at one time and another thing at another time, or says one thing and does another. For example, CBF representatives have repeatedly claimed that theirs was simply an alternative means of funding missions - including SBC missions - but they have worked consistently and energetically to persuade churches to donate to CBF and NOT to the SBC.
