Religion and Politics
Vol. IX, No. 8, September 1996
[The following is reprinted from the “Pastor’s Paragraph” of the Lugoff First Baptist Church, Lugoff, SC, Rev. Kenny Spain, pastor.]
An article entitled "Prayer and the Coming Election" caught my eye recently. Its basis was that great revival passage II Chronicles 7:14, “If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
The writer reminded us of the need for Christians to be responsibly and prayerfully involved in the political process. For too long the liberal elite of this country have intimidated Bible believing Christians into thinking they should silently stand idle due to so-called separation of church and state. Would someone please show the chapter and verse which tells the believer to let Godless infidels and compromising supposed-to-be Christians sell our nation out to the abortionist, pro-homosexual, anti-family agenda?
No, neither the church nor this pastor should use it's influence unethically to manipulate it's members politically. But we all should register, pray, get involved, and follow God as we exercise our God given freedom to vote into office godly men and women.
I agree with the writer of the above mentioned article. What would have happened without Daniel's powerful prayer influence upon the godless rulers of Babylon? They learned the hard way that "God rules in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whom so ever He will.” (Daniel 4:25).
We should pray according to I Timothy 2:1-2 for all that are in authority. Ask God to remove leaders who will not follow God with their whole heart. Ask the Lord to raise up leaders who will lead us to live peaceable, godly, and honest lives. Who knows what God can do through your prayer. James said, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” Let's believe God!
