Southern Baptist Alliance Vote against SBC

Vol. III, No. 7, November 1990

Directors of the SBA met Sep. 27-28 in Washington and voted unanimously to strike from the SBA purpose statement a reference to "the continuance of our ministry and mission within the Southern Baptist Convention" and replace the phrase with, "the expression of our ministry and mission through cooperative relationships with other Baptist bodies and the larger Christian community." They also voted to recommend a new name for the organization, which would remove reference to Southern Baptists. SBA leaders are moving toward a consensus that the fellowship forged at the 23-25 Aug. meeting of "concerned Baptists" in Atlanta is the first step in an exodus from the SBC by disenchanted moderates.
