A Critical Juncture
by T. C. Pinckney Vol. XVII, No. 6, June/July 2004
Each election of our governmental leaders is very important, for those who hold office shape our political, and in large part private, life. And Christians, of all people, should inform themselves and vote in every election.
But the national election this November for president, senators, and representatives may well prove to be the most critical of our lifetimes.
The United States stands at a crossroads on many issues. Just think of some examples: terrorism, taxes, abortion, marriage, homosexuality, judicial appointments, and ultimately our very freedom to witness for Jesus. Truly, America as we have known it will soon cease to exist if Christians do not inform themselves and vote their consciences. Let me quote a portion of what Doyle Chauncey, Executive Director of the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia wrote in the May/June Proclaimer:
“I am also suggesting that each church form action committees, inform their members about the issues, encourage their members to register, and get out and vote in November. You can order an action kit from the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission website at www.erlc.org. Let us help your church take action!”
Remember Jesus’ words in Matthew 12:30, “He that is not with me is against me;” Likewise in an election. If you do not inform yourself and vote with the right side, you are voting against what’s right. Every vote counts! Pray! Register! Vote!
