The Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia met for a "One-day Prayer/Spiritual Preparation Retreat" at the Missionary Learning Center in Rockville on Tuesday. April 5, 1994. Al Gilbert, a member of the. executive committee and pastor of Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, led the Prayer/Spiritual Preparation emphasis. The purpose of this one-day prayer retreat was to humbly seek our Lord' s divine direction for the SBCV and its relationship to Virginia Baptists.

It was a glorious time of studying God's Word and bowing in His presence seeking a fresh word from our dear Lord. It was also a time of introspection, transparency, and honest discussion about the purpose and direction of the SBCV. The Spirit of God moved in our hearts as we encountered the living Lord.

SBCV President Tommy Taylor, pastor of London Bridge Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, led the afternoon business session. As a result of this vitally needed prayer and business-matters time, the members of the SBCV Executive Committee reaffirmed the importance of the SBCV in helping to lead Virginia Baptists back to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, proclaiming the Bible as God's holy, inerrant Word, reaching lost souls for Christ, and nurturing God's people into mature Christians. The SBCV Executive Committee made it clear we are willing to cooperate with anyone who will agree to these non-negotiable truths. It was also made clear that our allegiance is first and foremost to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, our local church, the Southern Baptist Convention, and to our state convention insofar as the latter is in support of the SBC.

In order to help strengthen and unify the work of the SBCV, approval was given to a motion by Kelly Burris, pastor of Kempsville Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, and chairman of the Search Committee for an Executive Director, to move forward in securing a part-time "Interim Executive Director." This will allow the SBCV to address some immediate needs, provide a central location and central information center, and provide better direction and leadership while allowing the search committee adequate time to locate a permanent executive Director.

The "One-day Prayer Spiritual Preparation Retreat" may prove to be one of the most significant meetings of the SBCV with far-reaching and exciting results.
