Cecil Sherman on Homosexuality
Vol. VI, No. 4, May 1993
Cecil Sherman, coordinator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF), set forth his views on homosexuality in the 1 April issue of the liberal newspaper Baptists Today. He wrote that homosexuality is a sin, and homosexuals should be told God can change their orientation. While Christians should oppose homosexuality, they should do so in "the spirit of Jesus." “The Bible teaches homosexuality is a sin," Sherman wrote, and gays who argue otherwise "twist" Scripture. Sherman emphasized that these views are his own and not an official position from the CBF. "I hope CBF will not make a statement on this subject," he added. Thus far CBF has made no statement regarding homosexuality.
[Editorial Comment: After acknowledging what Scripture says, it seems peculiar not to want your denomination to make a pronouncement agreeing with the Bible. Are there considerations that outweigh the Word of God?] [Word & Way]
