Good Samaritan Colony
by T. C. Pinckney Vol. XIII, No. 4, April 2000
The Good Samaritan Colony is a long-term, non-profit, residential facility for men addicted to drugs or alcohol. In 1976 the Colony was founded on the belief that Jesus is the answer to all problems, including substance abuse. Their purpose is to present Jesus to residents and show that He is God's solution to such addiction. The Good Samaritan program is designed to lead residents to a commitment or rededication to Christ, with sobriety as an added blessing.
The program includes enrollment for a minimum one year period, chapel services each week, personal counselling, family counselling (if needed), prayer, private Bible study course, nutritious meals, regular work hours, personal hygiene/etiquette, continuing education, and valuable life experiences.
Traditional treatment centers have only a 10%-15% success rate. In contrast the good Samaritan Colony has a 90% success rate. The difference comes because of the Christ centered program and because the Colony only accepts men who are completely willing to commit themselves to their recovery and rehabilitation. Applicants are evaluated and accepted without regard to race or national origin.
The Colony is supported entirely by voluntary gifts from former residents, their families, churches, United Ways, businesses, and other individuals. Residents are not charged.
The facility is located in Ruby, SC. If you or someone you know would like more information about joining the program, call Richard Gardner, Executive Director, at 843-634-6848, or write to him at The Good Samaritan Colony, P.O. Box 38, Ruby, SC 29741.
