ACLU Names First Openly Gay Top Executive:

Vol. XIV, No. 8, September 2001

The American Civil Liberties Union, already known for advancing the civil liberties of some more aggressively than others, is likely to embrace the homosexual agenda as never before under its new executive director. Anthony D. Romero, who takes the reins of the ACLU this fall, is the first openly gay chief in the liberal activist group's history. As an executive with the Ford Foundation the past nine years, he was an admitted crusader for special rights for homosexuals.

Nadine Strossen, president of the ACLU's board of directors, hailed Romero's appointment, saying he "represents the future of America" — because he is "bilingual and gay." [Source: Focus on the Family's Citizen magazine, September 2001, page 9]
