Worship: To please us, or to please God?

Vol. XIX, No. 3, March 2006

Since worship is directed toward God, surely then it must pattern itself according to our conception of His nature and being. He is a God of order, beauty, mystery and power, so our attempts to worship Him should surely take cognizance of those factors. Do we then shape our worship according to what pleases us, or should it be planned to fit His characteristics, and what would please Him? If God is kept in mind rather than ourselves, our worship will surely be characterized by simplicity, sincerity, orderliness and a sense of the Divine, reaching as best we can to the majesty and beauty which He possesses.
