VA Marriage Amendment Goes Voters
Vol. XIX, No. 3, March 2006
A proposed state constitutional amendment which would ban same-sex marriage went to the Virginia Senate after having been passed by the House of Delegates. On 24 January the Senate approved the amendment. That means the question will face Virginia’s voters this November.
Once approved by voters, Virginia would join the 18 states which already have constitutional bans on same-sex marriage. While Virginia already has strong laws prohibiting same-sex marriage and similar unions for homosexuals, supportive legislators maintain that the amendment is necessary to prevent court challenges to the marriage laws.
