By the Numbers

Vol. XVII, No. 3, March 2004

– 33% of Americans don’t go to church, up from 21% in 1991

– 86% of Americans believe in a God who answers prayers

– 50% of Americans describe themselves as “religious”

– 45% of Americans say personal views guide them more than do God and religious teachings

– 66% of U.S. adults “strongly agree” that they are very happy with their life

– 70% of U.S. adults say their personal “religious faith is constantly growing deeper”

Comments: Note the contradictions in the above figures. 86% believe in a God who answers prayers, but only 50% describe themselves as “religious”. 45% of us say personal views guide them more than do God and religious teaching, but 70% say their personal “religious faith is constantly growing deeper”.
