Left-Right Theology
Vol. X, No. 9, Nov/Dec 1997
A newly published study documents significant theological differences between the Christian right and left. Charles Hall of California Lutheran University writes in the September issue of The Review of Religious Research that 54% of the religious right say they read the Bible literally compared to only 4% of the religious left. Also, 98% of the Christian Right said salvation is found only through Jesus, while 64% of Christian Left respondents said the same. 88% of the Christian Right considered themselves theological conservatives while 66% of the Christian Left did so.
Hall also reported that members of the left and right are remarkably similar demographically: in average age (42), income (about $35,000), mostly college graduates with some holding graduate degrees, and fairly evenly divided between men and women. Baptists Today, 20 November 1997.
