SBCV Finance Committee Report
by Jim Pope, Vol. VII, No. 2, February 1994
Chairman, Finance Committee, SBCV
The duties of the Finance Committee as recorded in the SBCV constitution are: "The finance Committee shall have the responsibility for planning, leading, directing, and educating members in matters relating to collection, use, and disbursements of contributions made through the SBCV."
This being the first year of SBCV operation, committee members were not sure what type budget was needed, or what funds would be available. A generalized budget was presented and approved at the September 1993 statewide SBCV meeting. This budget was for $100,000 with 70% to be used for missions in Virginia [see separate Missions Committee Report below this article]. The concept was that this 70% would be used for financial assistance for church extension, financial supplement for mission pastors, emergency financial aid to seminary students, and other missions approved by the Executive Committee. 20% of the budget is to be used for ministry programs in Virginia such as evangelism and outreach, education and discipleship, family life concerns, and other programs approved by the Executive Committee. The remaining 10% is expected to be used for administrative expenses, including office expenses, postage, printing, and other items approved by the Executive Committee.
The budget took effect 1 October 1993. However, from January through December 1993 the SBCV has only received $46,891.38, obviously not enough to meet the proposed budget or do what is being planned. As of the end of December 1993, 28 churches and six individuals had contributed to the SBCV. It is time for the approximately 640 conservative churches in Virginia to begin to support the SBCV financially. It is essential that more churches regularly contribute if we are to accomplish the plans currently being formulated. Examples are requests the Missions Committee has received, and the prospective hiring of a paid SBCV executive director.
An article in the Banner two issues back spoke of "resources which consist of time, talent, and talents (money)." Our efforts to win back the BGAV to the full authority of God's perfect Word, require all three: time, talent, and money. Each pastor and layman who reads this article needs to take steps to have your church place the SBCV in your church budget today (if you have not already done so). Contributions should be addressed to: Mr. Doyle Chauncey; Treasurer, SBCV; P.O. Box 62000; Virginia Beach, VA 23466. Checks should be payable to: SBCV. [Note: Since 1994 the SBCV address has changed to: 4101 Cox Road, Ste. 100; Glen allen, VA 23060-3320.]
Remember the purpose of the SBCV: "To assist local Southern Baptist churches in Virginia to win the lost to Christ, to develop believers, and to promote missions and evangelism through an organization which will provide sound biblical teaching, inspirational meetings, timely information, and mutual fellowship, undergirded by the prayers of the saints." Saints, we ask you to support the SBCV with your time, your talent, your money, and your prayers.

SBCV Missions Committee News Release
January 20, 1994: The Missions Committee of the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia has begun its work by developing an Application for Financial Assistance. The application will be sent to any church or mission supportive of the SBCV and desiring financial assistance for a particular project. Applications can be obtained by writing to Bob Jackson, chairman of the committee, at 105 Stanford Street, Galax, Virginia 24333. [As of 2005 send applications to the Glen Allen address above.]
At the time this issue of the Banner was written, the Missions Committee had scheduled its first meeting for Thursday, February 17, at Northside Baptist Church in Charlottesville. During that 11:00 a.m. gathering, committee members were to discuss applications for assistance already received. Also on the agenda was a discussion of possible mission activities to be recommended to the full SBCV Executive Committee when that body next meets in early March.
The Missions Committee is open to suggestions from readers of the Banner regarding its assignment and work. You may write to the chairman at the above address or call him at 1-703-236-7484. [Call the SBCV at 888-234-7716.]
