SBCV Missions Committee Meets

Vol. VIII, No. 1, January 1995

The SBCV Missions Committee met at Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke on January 12 and approved a number of recommendations for consideration by the SBCV Executive Committee. Among those recommendations were proposals to develop long term partnerships with at least one foreign country and one pioneer mission area in the U.S.

With a goal of developing opportunities for the involvement of conservative churches in hands-on mission activities in 1995, the Missions Committee will be working with the Foreign Mission Board to select one or two nations for a foreign partnership. During; the Committee's meeting, Pastor Ivan Rusu from the Ukraine spoke through a translator of opportunities for evangelism and church development in his country.

In a similar manner, the Home Mission Board's advice will be sought on the development of a U.S. partnership. New England has been mentioned as one possibility for this type of project.

During its gathering, the Missions Committee also voted to recommend changes in the language of the application for student scholarship assistance. The new terminology will further define the purpose of this type of assistance as money directed exclusively toward persons who are in actual preparation for Christian ministry at a seminary, Bible college, or Bible institute.

The Committee concluded its deliberations by voting to send applications for financial grants to one mission church and one church desiring to sponsor summer youth programs. The committee further agreed to ask the Baptist Banner- and the SBCV News to promote two FMB sponsored crusades, one in Nairobi, Kenya, this summer, and one in Denmark this spring.
