A study by Duke University found that of 4,000 North Carolinians 65 or older, those who participated in religious activities were 40% less likely to have high blood pressure. The effect seems to be strongest in blacks and people between 65 and 75. The impact was a reduced diastolic pressure of 78 mm versus about 81 mm for the non-religious. Studies show that reduction translates into approximately a 20% decrease in cardiovascular mortality. [World magazine, September 1998]
