Confidence in God’s Providence

“We know that all things work for good to those who love God.” (Romans 8:28)

There are some things in life of which I am absolutely sure. I know, for instance, that an invisible hand is ruling the world’s affairs, and that wherever providence may drift, Jehovah steers it. That re-assuring knowledge prepares me for everything, especially the trials of life. I can look over the raging waters and see the Lord Jesus treading the waves, and I can hear a voice saying, “It is I, be not afraid.” I know too that God is always wise, and, knowing this, I am confident that there can be no accidents, no mistakes; that nothing can occur which ought not to arise.

“We know that all things work for good to those who love God.” The Christian does not merely hold this as a theory, but he knows it as a matter of fact. I believe that God rules all, that He governs wisely, and that He brings good our of evil. My heart is assured, and this enables me to meet with calmness each trial as it comes.

The Apostle Paul trusted wholeheartedly in the providence of God. He could say, “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content” (Philippians 4:11). Joseph, the patriarch, gave a classic statement of God’s sovereignty over the affairs of men when he said, “You (his brothers) meant it for evil against me, but God meant it for good ... to save many people alive” (Genesis 50:20). If you do not come to the same assurance of God’s providential control of everything, you will not fully realize the lessons He wants to teach you through your trials. You will not be able to apply the truth of Romans 8:28.

Only trust Him,

Pastor Dennis
